How to Look Outside the Box for New Restaurant Concepts

This article below, actually really it’s just a press release, is a reminder that not all the best concepts for starting a restaurant are going to be home grown.

This particular story is about someone who is looking to bring franchise concepts to the United States from Canada but really it should just serve as a reminder in the larger picture but you can find things that work anywhere and bring them here.

In fact it’s probably better to look a little farther afield than just your surrounding community to see what might be available and what concepts you might be able to take on par or combined with other ideas to meet a new demand or offer a unique concept into your local market.

Lots of restaurant entrepreneurs have had success bringing ideas over with them when they’ve moved to the US from other countries where they have brought back ideas that they saw during their travels.

The whole idea for Starbucks as an upscale coffee shop offering espresso drinks not been widely available was the result of the founders trip through Italy to explore the coffee culture that exists there and then bring it back to the US.

That isn’t to say that you need to book a trip to Europe to go find your next restaurant concept but it does mean that you should limit your thinking just those things that are immediately in front of your eyes local area.

Give your creativity some room to run when you are working on your restaurant business plan and you may just find a new twist for your concept that makes all the difference.

Lawrence Austin immodestly believes there is no entity better suited to introduce Canadian franchise companies to the United States market than his newly formed company Metrium Development Corp. After many years as COO of Pizza Pizza, Canada’s largest pizza delivery company and the past three years as COO of Miami Subs Grill, Austin believes he brings the best of both worlds to each market.

“This move is clearly a great opportunity for me,” said Austin. “With offices in Toronto, Canada and Fort Lauderdale, Fl. Metrium’s goal is to provide strategic underpinnings and a more effective game plan for those who are seeking to expand their concepts and brands both internationally domestically.”

The Metrium team includes a strategic alliance with Peter Nasca Associates, Inc. one of the regions’ leading public relations and marketing communications firms with extensive experience in both domestic and international franchise development.

Peter Nasca, president of the 27-year-old firm, has served as a member of Miami Subs board of directors when the company was public and was on the board that sold the Company 11 years ago.

“To my knowledge, no franchise consulting firm has ever specialized in bringing Canadian franchises into the US and we’re proud to be part of the strategy,” said Nasca. “If there was ever one person to head such an initiative it’s Lawrence who has had success on both sides of the border. With Canada’s robust economy there has never been a better opportunity for those select companies to bring successful concepts to the U.S. regardless of the category.”

“We want to emphasize that this is a complete turnkey operation for any firm that chooses to utilize our services,” added Austin. “Not only do we have one of the nation’s leading franchise attorneys on our team but we have the ability to train and develop at our own facilities.

“One of the biggest concerns for franchise companies that haven’t done business in the U.S. is sourcing the best suppliers and leveraging those relationships,” said Austin. “Supplier relations, negotiating contracts, designing co-op marketing programs, building strategic alliances, partnerships in profit, etc. are another area of great expertise we bring to the table.”

Austin said Metrium’s main objective will be to define a clear positioning for their client companies that will allow them to effectively compete against other franchisors as well as go after new franchisees in targeted geographical markets. Austin has branded his new Companies as Metrium Development Corp, Metrium Marketing Metrium Franchising Corp.
